GRAPHITES PENTARKAN [WSI]

INTRODUCTION

Eczema

There is some confusion about the meaning of the words dry or weeping eczema and dermatitis. It is perhaps best to regard dermatitis as any type of inflammation of the skin and eczema as a variety of dermatitis characterized by itching lesions which may be deep and dry or red lesions and weeping eruption usually associated with itching.

Some substances cause an eczematous reaction when applied to the skin of normal people; others do so only when applied to the skin of people who are especially sensitive. Less often eczema results from the eating of particular foods. Infantile eczema (atopic eczema) occurs in babies who have inherited an abnormal tendency to develop hypersensitivity to foreign proteins and these children frequently go on to suffer from hay fever, asthma, and persistent patches of eczema in the flexures of the limbs. They are generally dry but the skin cracks.

Contact eczema (or contact dermatitis) is extremely common. The substances which may cause eczema when applied to the skin are numerous but may be classified into the following groups :

Chemical: Drugs are important members of this group. Almost any drug may cause eczema on the skin of a sensitive individual. Nickel (on suspender and brassiere clips), lipstick, nail varnish, and hair dyes are common causes of contact eczema, and so are the dyes in furs and other articles of clothing. Soaps, bleaching agents, and detergents constitute another big group of articles which can create reactions on the skin.

Substances of plant origin: Some plants like Dolichos, Parthenium, Rhus-Toxicodendron, and others tend to cause skin allergic reactions and eczema.

Indications: Dry eczema, itching, cracking and thickening of the skin.
